Oxford Dictionaries just announced their word of the year for 2015 and they picked … an emoji. Specifically, a smiley face that’s laughing so hard TEARS are coming out of its eyes. Apparently it’s the most used emoji in the US and UK. The editors say “Although emojis have been a staple of texting teens for some time, emoji culture exploded into the global mainstream over the past year. Emojis have come to embody a core aspect of living in a digital world.”
Even though an emoji is the word of the year, they say they don’t have any plans to add them to their dictionaries … yet. The actual WORD ’emoji’ has been in the Oxford English dictionary since 2013.
Some people use emojis; I do love them, my kids do as well. But then there are those that will never use an emoji if their life depended on it. That would be my husband! And if he did, he would probably text me the happy poop, which isn’t actually poo, it’s chocolate ice cream. Yea, right!
