Signs to look for during Elder Abuse Awareness Month

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month and while there are many forms of abuse, the Illinois Department on Aging is giving signs to look for.

Department Spokesperson Veronica Vera says for every incident of elder abuse that is reported, five others go unreported.

“Financial exploitation is the type of abuse that is most frequently reported. Fifty-four percent of reports are financial exploitation and a lot of times what you’ll see is people will experience more than one type of abuse,” Vera said.

If an elderly person is being abused, you can call the department’s hotline at 866-800-1409.
