With warmer weather arriving in Livingston County, many people are beginning to venture out and enjoy the weather with bonfires or fire pits in their back yard.
Pontiac Fire Chief Scott Runyon says there are very specific rules that need to be followed when enjoying a recreational fire.
“Recreational burning is allowed in the City of Pontiac. There are a few rules that are set up through our city ordinances, mainly for your own safety and your neighbor’s safety and so you don’t have property loss, so you can have backyard fires. Generally, as a rule, 25 feet from your house. Try to get it as far away as possible from any structure, so burning grass, blowing embers, so on and so forth, doesn’t get to these structures and burn them up. It’s for your own safety and everybody’s well being,” Runyon said.
