Pair looks to curb overdose deaths

By Cynthia Grau/WJEZ News

A pair from Livingston County is looking to stop overdose deaths by training and distributing naloxone kits.

Shad Hamilton and Patricia LaBorence run LAND, or the Livingston Area Naloxone Distribution. Naloxone, better known as Narcan, is given to people who are experiencing an opiate overdose in the hopes of saving the person’s life.

They explained how it works.

“We’re certified to train people how to administer them. When we meet with someone, we show them the kit, explain how to use it, explain to them that they still need to give CPR and still need to definitely call for help and do rescue breathing. It’s a muscular injection,” LaBorence said.

“You can put it in the arm or the thigh,” Hamilton said.

“You don’t have to worry about taking off clothes, either. It can go straight through jeans,” LaBorence said.

All requests for kits and training are confidential. For more information, contact Hamilton at 815-520-7089 or LaBorence at 815-374-0517. The full Forum where the pair discusses the entire program is available at WJEZ.com.
