Health Department Has Help for Women’s Medical Needs

By Todd Wineburner

With COVID-19 concerns dominating the health conversation, it’s easy to forget that October is breast cancer awareness month. Erin Fogarty, Health Education and Marketing Director for the Livingston County Health Department, says early detection is a critical component in fighting the disease, so it’s important to know that services are available for women who need help getting access to mammograms and other important procedures.

According to Fogarty, the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program helps women obtain the diagnostic services they need regardless of their insurance status. For women between 40 and 64 who are uninsured, the program provides access to free mammography services. For women who are insured, the program helps cover deductibles and other expenses.

There are no income or insurance deductible requirements for the program and the LCHD can help with other expenses, as well. Gas cards from the Susan G. Komen foundation, for instance, are available for women travelling to breast health appointments.

More information about the IBCCP is available by contacting the Livingston County Health Department at (815) 844-7174, extension 236.
