The Cannabis Discussion Comes to Pontiac

By A.J. Harris

At the last Pontiac City Council meeting, the discussion focused on what would happen should the city be chosen for a legal cannabis dispensary.

The state is being sectioned into zones to decide where the dispensaries will go, and in Pontiac’s zone are also Quincy, Macomb, and Taylorville.

Three dispensaries will be allowed in Pontiac’s zone.

The council focused on zoning and taxation, including the dispensary’s set back distance from schools and parks, as well as craft grower and cultivation variances.

City Attorney Alan Schrock said that there is still the possibility that the county could remain “dry” regarding recreational cannabis, and added that if it is something that will be allowed in the community, then they have to address all issues that go along with it.

A vote on a 3 percent tax on gross sales was also taken and approved.
