A group of activists is planning to voice opposition for a proposed ICE detention center.
No ICE Dwight is rallying supporters across central Illinois to attend Tuesday night’s Dwight Planning Commission meeting. The commission plans to discuss annexing land for the undocumented immigrant detention center. The ICE detention center would be located off Interstate 55 and Illinois Route 17 in Dwight.
“Nobody should profit from human misery. And no community should welcome a for-profit immigration prison. Seven other communities throughout our region have rejected these prisons–and Dwight should do the same. ICE, GO AWAY!” said Fred Tsao, Senior Policy Counsel at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights in a release.
According to the No ICE Dwight Facebook page, there are multiple caravan locations in Bloomington-Normal, Peoria, Champaign and Springfield for those wanting to attend the meeting.
The group will hold a press conference Tuesday at 5 p.m. before the commission meeting.
The village board plans to vote on annexing the proposed property into the village on Feb. 25.
