While looking at election results, people may notice that voter turnout had very small numbers – some in the single digits.
Livingston County Clerk Kristy Masching explains why that happens.
“We have 22,861 registered voters. There was a little less than 4,000 cards cast for a percentage turnout of 17.36 percent for this consolidated election. In past history, we’ve had anywhere from 11 percent to 35 percent. Overall, we thought, with the 17.36 percent, it was a little above average for a consolidated election. One thing why it is usually a lower turnout is because there are so many uncontested races, so there’s a lot of voters who say there’s nobody to vote for, but there are. Each one of those people circulated petitions and they were happy to have votes,” Masching said.
