In nearly 100 years, the price of mailing a letter is going down! As you can imagine, the USPS isn’t very happy. They asked and received an increase in the price of a stamp from $.47 cents to $.49 during the great Recession in 2014. It was supposed to be temporary from the get-go! The USPS says it will cost them $2billion this year by losing that $.02 per stamp. Ouch! The last time there was a postage decrease was in July of 1919 when the stamp dropped from $.03 to $.02. Going all the way back to the Civil War this is only the third decrease!! One thing to note is that the USPS, though it says United States, is not funded by tax dollars and relies on postage as its main revenue source.
