Illinois American Water and Missouri American Water have been named Arcus Award finalists for their prescription drug take-back program.
This program started in 2008 in the Pontiac district through a partnership with Pontiac Township High School. Those students created the model used by American Water and to date, 50 pharmaceutical drop-off sites have been established.
Karen Cotton, external affairs manager for Illinois American Water, said being selected as finalists for this award is a testament to the teamwork between the company and dedicated high school students.
“I think the focus on the award is great, because it brings recognition to proper pharmaceutical disposal and for our work with Pontiac Township High School. It shows students can make a difference and companies can partner with students to make a difference to protect their environment,” Cotton said.
