With the mass shooting that happened in San Bernadino, California, Wednesday, many people across the world are looking to law enforcement to see what they need to do in case that ever happens in their community.

Pontiac Police Major Dan Davis explained the department has mandatory annual training for active threats, which is called the Law Enforcement Active Response.

“The old way of doing this was basically setting up a perimeter and waiting for the bad guys to come out. The new way of doing this is if there is an ongoing threat, police are there to neutralize that threat,” Davis said

Davis also said these events aren’t always exclusive to larger metropolitan areas.

“Always be aware of your surroundings. Past situations like this have shown they’re not limited to your larger metropolitan areas. They happen in small towns just the same as they happen in larger areas. Just be aware of your surroundings and always have a backup plan for your own safety and than of your family and people around you,” Davis said.

He also said tips for people to help themselves while waiting for law enforcement to arrive can be found online, as various entities have different guidelines.
