Here’s what’s happening in the State of Illinois

It’s a lot of work and a lot of fun being president of the Illinois State Medical Society. The northern Illinois emergency physician who is in charge until April says the state’s financial condition is, of course, all-encompassing.

It’s a year to celebrate at ISMS; the organization is 175 years old and was founded by a Dr. John Todd, whose niece, Mary, married someone whose name is familiar to all Illiniosans. Yes, President Abraham Lincoln was Dr. Todd’s nephew-in-law.

And in other State news, teenagers are like the rest of us in this way: they know they have bad habits but stick with them anyway.

A survey commissioned by Bloomington-based State Farm Insurance shows more than 90 percent of drivers age 16-19 know texting while driving is wrong, but 44 percent do it anyway.

The smartphone adds a dimension most adults hadn’t dreamt of when they were distracted by friends, food, and the radio in those days gone by, says company spokeswoman Missy Dundov.

Dundov, who says simply setting the example is the least adults can do, is also promoting a contest called “Celebrate My Drive,” in which the high school which gets the most commitments to safe driving can win a concert from Echosmith.
