A stretch of Route 66 north of Towanda has been closed since Friday and is expected to be reopened today.

On Friday, District 6 State Police said a sinkhole was discovered shortly after 5 p.m. A trooper and Illinois Department of Transportation workers noted a 14 by 5 foot area of ground that had collapsed causing the improved surface of Route 66 to become unstable.

The detour route will be McLean County 2150 East Road to McLean County 2000 North Road to Jefferson Street in Towanda.

Motorists are asked to exercise caution in navigating the detour.
