The man accused of killing a Long Point man over the weekend was seen in court Tuesday.
David C. Slayton has officially been charged with three counts of first degree murder, one count of attempt to commit first degree murder, home invasion, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. If convicted, those charges could have him serving prison time from anywhere between one year to life in prison.
According to probable cause recited by Livingston County State’s Attorney Seth Uphoff, the events of Sunday evening happened quickly, when Uphoff stated Stayton arrived at Samuel Murphy’s home, was looking for the woman he lived with, and Murphy denied him access, where it is alleged Stayton shot Murphy. According to Uphoff, Stayton took the woman and held her in that room until he later exited to confront police.
Stayton is being held at the LaSalle County Jail after Judge Jennifer Bauknecht set bond at $3 million, 10 percent.
Murphy died of his injuries, which, according to the autopsy report, was a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
A preliminary hearing for Stayton has been set for August 31 at 9:31 a.m.
