Summertime Sports Action on Classic Hits, 98.9, WJEZ

Even though school is out in most central Illinois school districts, Pontiac’s softball team is still very much alive. The Indians are in the sectional round on Wednesday at Washington taking on the host Panthers. PTHS won a Class 3A Regional Saturday defeating Geneseo. Dwight’s season came to an end Saturday in a loss to Argenta-Oreana which is now in the state finals.

Ridgeview-Lexington’s boys track team is basking in the glow of a state championship over the weekend. The Mustangs earned 10 individual medals and four relay medals at the state meet at Charleston to capture Ridgeview’s first state title in school history in any sport.  Mason Barr led the way with second -lace finishes in the 110 high hurdles, the 200 and anchoring the winning 800 relay and sixth-place 1,600 relay.  Teammate Tate Walcott won the long jump, took third in the 200 and helped the first -place 800 relay.

NASCAR’s Kyle Larson is coming to Fairbury on Wednesday to compete in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event at American Legion Speedway. Larson still races on the short tracks when he has time even as he competes among the top stock car drivers on the circuit.

The Chicago Cubs sleepwalked into Pittsburgh after a late game Sunday and early morning flight, but the Cubs bats came to life in a 7-0 win over the Pirates. Mike Montgomery and three relievers combined on a two-hit shutout. Anthony Rizzo homered as part of a three-for-three day.

The St. Louis Cardinals have missed on their first chance to gain ground on the first-place Brewers. The Cards lost to Milwaukee 8-3 on Memorial Day, pushing St. Louis into third place in the National League Central, five games back of the leaders.

The Chicago White Sox committed three errors during a five-run fifth inning that led Cleveland to a 9-6 win over the Sox.

The Normal CornBelters open a road trip tonight after taking Memorial Day off. The Belters visit Southern Illinois.

Three third-period goals lifted the Vegas Golden Knights to a 6-4 win over the Washington Capitals in the stanley cup finals.

The NBA Finals are set and it will be Golden State and Cleveland for the fourth year in a row. The Warriors beat Houston 101-92 in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. The championship round begins Thursday in Oakland.

Illinois Wesleyan’s softball team forced a winner-take-all Game 3 of the College World Series championship round, outlasting Virginia Wesleyan 5-4 in eight innings. Brea Walker pitched the complete game win. Maggie Graham doubled home the winning run in the eighth innings. The title game is at 11 a.m. in Oklahoma City.
