The Livingston County Public Health Department is reaching out to people in the area about diabetes and how to manage the diseases.
Health Education and Marketing Director Erin Fogarty explained how some things can help manage Type 1 Diabetes and can keep Type 2 from happening.
“Obviously, we always encourage people to stay active. Whenever we say ‘stay active,’ what does that mean? That means go out for at least 30 minutes a day and get your heart rate up in some way. That doesn’t mean you have to go for a 30 minute run or walk. It may mean you go out and rake leaves, shovel snow or mowing your lawn – something that’s going to get your heart rate up a little bit. We also want to encourage people do to weight bearing exercises so that we are encouraging muscle growth as well as bone strengthening. Thinking about preventing osteoporosis and those things later in life,” Fogarty said.
