Humiston Woods Hosting an Open House on Sunday, August 4th

By Todd Wineburner

The Humiston Woods Nature Center has an open house scheduled from 11 to 3 on Sunday, August 4th, and Center Director Ed Lipinski says it’s a great opportunity for area residents to get a glimpse of the original landscape of the prairie. 40 years ago, the Humiston woods area was incorporated as a not-for-profit, but the Camp and Humiston families purchased the land long before that. “In 1853, they (the Camps and Humistons) purchased the land that is now Humiston woods,” Lipinski says. “For many years, it existed as a picnic area, a pasture area, even as a hunting area…enjoyed by many, many people over the years.”

Lipinski says a short informational tour is planned for the open house, but visitors will have the opportunity to explore the grounds on their own as well. Master Naturalists will be on hand, too, and light refreshments will be provided. The Humiston Woods area is maintained by the Humiston Trust, so there is no charge for the event. “We just want people to come out and enjoy nature at its best in Livingston County,” Lipinski says.
