BLOOMINGTON – A judge issued a ruling Thursday in a high profile McLean County murder case, deciding to allow statements from the husband of a key prosecution witness, who placed the suspect at the crime scene.
Kirk Zimmerman of Bloomington is awaiting trial for allegedly shooting his ex-wife, Pamela Zimmerman, multiple times at her office on E. Washington St. in November 2014.
Our news partner, WMBD-TV, reports Judge Scott Drazewski allowed prosecutors to present statements from Charles Legg. His wife, Maria, claims she was in the parking lot outside the office building about the time of the murder, and saw a white, professional-looking man with some gray hair, much like Kirk Zimmerman’s appearance.
Maria Legg was able to identify Zimmerman after seeing his picture in the newspaper.
Charles and Maria Legg did not go to police with her story. Investigators came to her about a year-and-a-half later after receiving a tip.
The judge is barring testimony from another couple, the Gunthers, who claim Maria Legg told them she saw Zimmerman. The defendant’s lawyer calls the identification bizarre and not reliable.
The judge has yet to set a trial date. The next pre-trial hearing is scheduled August 31.
