Phone scams are nothing new for people, and being in the midst of tax time, IRS scams will be coming from all directions.
Our very own Cat had one at work Wednesday and immediately knew it was a scam. She is on the Do Not Call Registry, but let the recording play in its entirety.
“So I answer it and this recording says I’m being sued by the IRS and I need to call them immediately in order to make arrangements to pay, and so I just let it talk out and they’re giving me the phone number to call back, twice, and then there was silence. It was at that point I said I am on the do not call registry. Click – they hung up,” Cat said.
Tips to avoid being caught in any scam are to immediately hang up when you receive that kind of a call; never give out personal information, such as credit card or social security numbers; if you feel you may have fallen victim to a scam, check your credit history, call your credit card company or bank; or make a report to local police or make a report to the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov.
