The Illinois Concerns of Police Survivors Cycle Across Illinois stopped at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department for not only a break, but a special ceremony recognizing a former county deputy who died in the line of duty.
Sheriff Tony Childress retold the story of how Sheriff’s Deputy Charles Haney died on October 22, 1917 after being shot October 13.
After being shot three times, once in the leg and twice in the chest, Haney was still able to disarm his assailant and put him in handcuffs and held him until help could arrive.
Haney’s survivors were on hand for comments Saturday.
More than 50 riders started off in Alton on Friday, making their way to Chicago. Those cyclists represent survivors of Illinois officers, as well as families of officers from across the country who call Illinois home.
