In a recent check on tobacco compliance, the Pontiac retailers went 14 for 14—in a good way. All of the retailers checked refused to sell tobacco products to an underage individual. In Illinois it’s illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under age 18, and Major Dan Davis of the Pontiac Police says checking for compliance is an ongoing effort. The latest checks are the first in a series of three that the police have planned. Since 2007, the Pontiac PD has been involved with the “Kids Can’t Buy ‘em Here” campaign through the Illinois Liqour Control Commission. That program provides grants that allow the police department to work with area retailers to make sure the law is understood.
