Livingston County Sheriff Marty Meredith has officers on duty at rural schools throughout Livingston County today. In light of the tragic circumstances in Connecticut, Meredith thought a precautionary measure was in order. There have been no specific threats or incidents in the area, but Meredith says there have been 33 school violence incidents in recent memory nationwide, including one potentially tragic situation in Normal. He says his officers are on duty outside the schools keeping an eye out for anything unusual, and that they won't be working inside the schools unless invited by school administrators.
Other law enforcement agencies in the county have their own protocols in place, and they're in communication with each other to create an environment of enhanced security.
