CHICAGO - The commercial counselor of Iraq says there are business opportunities in Iraq for Illinois companies.
Naufel Alhassan, Iraqi commercial counselor at the Iraq embassy in Washington, says the economy of Iraq is growing and there are opportunities for business partnerships there.
Iraq’s budget is growing with $100 billion this year and an estimated $135-$140 billion in 2013. Some of that money is going to upgrade infrastructure such as roads and schools. Alhassan says there may also be agriculture opportunities.
While many talented people left Iraq in the 1980s and 1990s, Alhassan says there remains an educated workforce in the areas of engineering and other related jobs.
Alhassan’s comments come from a roundtable hosted by Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford. Leaders of several Illinois-based businesses were in attendance.
