Another Auction of Unclaimed Property Going on Right Now
9:07AM Thursday
March 21, 2013

By Todd Wineburner

The state has vaults full of unclaimed property and Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford wants to clear them out. The state maintains its own unclaimed property website at icash.illinois.gov. There you can not only join ebay-style online auctions of unclaimed property, you can also check to see if the state is holding property that's rightfully yours.

An auction is currently going on, but it closes tomorrow (Friday, 3-22) at 10 a.m. Even after the end of the auction, the site will still be available to check your name for property held by the state. Rutherford says the state maintains its own web presence for the auctions and inventory because it's cheaper than using an outside provider. Items held by the state range in value from a few dollars to a claim that was settled just a few months ago that was worth millions.
