Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan and House Minority Leader Tom Cross

An Illinois House committee has passed a pension reform bill that has the support of both Speaker Mike Madigan and Minority Leader Tom Cross. In general, the bill eliminates some pension increases for retired state workers and teachers, and makes other adjustments to proposals submitted earlier in the year by Representative Elaine Nekritz. Minority Leader Cross summed up the bill by saying it does what needs to be done, and it avoids putting teacher pension pressure on local school districts. Cross said the Senate’s reaction to the bill is uncertain, but House Speaker Madigan says he’s confident that the measure is constitutional. The measure is on the agenda for today's (5/2) action and should be brought before the entire house.
