Local efforts to save the Pontiac prison continue. What started out as a “save the prison party” has grown into something much larger. Kathy Finkenbinder from ASTA Care of Pontiac, turned the idea into a parade. The “save the prison parade” is slated for Wednesday, June 4at 1:30 p.m. Finkenbinder says the parade will have 200 participants and the list keeps growing. Finkenbinder says she’ll even invite the governor to take part. The parade will begin and end at ASTA Care on Lowell Avenue and the specifics of the route are still being worked out. Livingston County residents were alarmed to hear the news earlier this month that the governor wanted to close the maximum-security Pontiac Correctional Center, while keeping a similar facility open near Joliet. Meanwhile, State Senator Dan Rutherford and State Representative Keith Sommer are encouraging residents to log on to their web sites for the latest information on the prison issue and to voice concerns. The websites can be found at: DanRutherford.com or sommer.ilhousegop.org.
