Leaders address governor's proposal to close prison
Leaders address governor's proposal to close prison
Local officials are reminding the public that the governor’s proposal to close the Pontiac Correctional Center isn’t a done deal. State Senator Dan Rutherford says that as part of the state facilities closure act, the Blagojevich administration will be required to present in writing why the state wants to close the prison. Livingston County Board Chair Bill Flott calls for a sensible plan, regarding the future of the Pontiac facility. Senator Rutherford plans to hold a public hearing on the matter, with a date and time to be announced. Pontiac Area Chamber of Commerce president Cheri Lambert says the prison is crucial to the local economy. State Representative Keith Sommer of Morton urges the governor to keep his promise to the working people of Illinois. This week, the governor announced plans to close the maximum-security prison, while keeping a similar facility open, near Joliet.
