Smoke detector saves Dwight family from fire
Smoke detector saves Dwight family from fire
A smoke detector may have saved the lives of a Dwight family. Firefighters were called to a basement fire at the two-story farmhouse north of Dwight early Friday morning. The blaze caused heavy damage to the home’s basement, while the first floor suffered heat and smoke damage. Dwight Deputy Fire Chief Rodney Leroy says the fire may have started from a plastic box fan in the basement that overheated and caught some nearby debris on fire. Leroy says the family of five had just replaced the battery in a smoke alarm and the alarm woke everyone up. All five people escaped, uninjured. Firefighters from several area departments, including Gardner, Reddick, Ransom, Essex and Mazon, assisted the Dwight Fire Department, while ambulance personnel from Duffy’s and Dwight were also on the scene.
