Suspect in Custody in Fulton County Shooting

AVON – A man who barricaded himself in a home in rual Avon Tuesday afternoon has been arrested.

Illinois State Police District commander capt. Jon Dively said the suspect was taken into custody after the more than 18 hour stand off.

“Deputy (Troy) Chisum succumbed to his injuries. No other injures were reported,” said Dively at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies including the Illinois State Police responded to the scene to assist the Fulton County Sheriffs Department, at which the suspect barricaded himself inside a residence. At approximately 8:20 a.m. this morning (Wednesday morning) the suspect was taken into custody.”

The suspect has been identified as Nathan Woodring, 42, of Avon. The suspect was being transported to McDonough County Jail where he is being held pending formal charges.

Fulton County Deputy Troy Chisum responded to a domestic battery call at the home in Avon Tuesday afternoon where he was allegedly shot by Woodring and later died of his injuries.

The sheriff says Chisum worked for the department for four-and-a-half years, was a paramedic, and member of the West Central Special Response Team.
