Storm Safety is a Priority This Year

By Neal Doyle

Summer thunderstorms are inevitable, and the National Weather Service wants to remind everyone how to stay safe when lightning is striking.

The safest place to be is inside away from windows and plumbing, but if you’re caught outside you can still mitigate the danger.

Avoid open fields and hilltops, and if you are camping, seek a low area.

Stay away from tall, isolated trees, and if you are in a forest stay close to a lower stand of trees.

If you are in a group, spread out to avoid electrical current to travel between individuals.

Above all else, avoid the water.

The National Weather Service has reported two deaths from lightning so far this year.
