Pontiac City Council Considers Proposed Rec Center Changes

By A.J. Harris

Pontiac Director of Parks and Recreation Taylor Baxter discussed Rec Center fees and splash pad furnishings at the Pontiac City Council meeting Monday night.

Baxter outlined fee increases for Rec Center membership, but his primary emphasis was on eliminating policies that are discouraging participation.

Baxter told the council that you currently have to have a pass to participate in many programs, and he says the center has lost some business because people in those programs don’t always want a general rec center membership. He believes that changing the membership requirement will lead to more foot traffic.

Baxter also discussed two recent additions to the rec center–the cycle studio and fitness theater. Those facilities offer online services and currently require additional fees for use. Baxter recommends including the use of both rooms in the cost of a Rec Center pass. He also wants to eliminate fees for those who are visiting the center to simply watch an event.

Baxter also wants to purchase furnishings for the new splash pad, which will have its grand opening May 24.
