Pontiac residents will have the opportunity to receive emergency alerts directly via text, e-mail or voice message in the event of an emergency.
Recent published reports say the Vermilion Valley Regional Emergency Communications Joint Authority Board will be implementing Nixle, a free subscription-based community information service.
Four categories of emergency alerts will be notified including emergency information, advisories, community information, and local traffic updates.
Local police and fire chiefs along with Randy Wittenberg, director of Communications at VCom, will have the ability to publish information. The Nixle service will start in Pontiac and will be expanded through all of Livingston County and Streator.
Residents can subscribe by texting a zip code to 888777 or online at www.nixle.com.
