PONTIAC – With most of the students out for summer, Pontiac District 90 is reflecting on the successes of the last school year.

Superintendent Jon Kilgore spoke with WJEZ’s Todd Wineburner on the Community Forum. He said fiscally, the district is doing very well for itself.

“With one month left in the district, things are looking good for us to meet our balanced budget, so that is excellent news,” Kilgore explained. “While we don’t know all of the details of our funding for next year, as far as the state is concerned, we presented a very tentative budget at our finance committee meeting.”

Kilgore said he expects the budget for the coming fiscal year to be balanced as well. He noted the district also had a number of students qualify for state in the IHSA, which prompted a new kind of celebration to recognize the students who worked hard and were rewarded.

“Throughout the year whenever somebody qualifies to state, we have a clap-out. Everybody comes out of their classroom, they parade through the hallway and we clap them out. We had so many of those this year, which is great because it means we’re celebrating student success,” said Kilgore. “And it’s not just athletes, we’ve had the math team, for example.”

The school board recently approved Designation Graduate of Distinction, which will be similar to the distinctions given to college graduates when they get their diplomas.
